Periodontology

Periodontology deals with the diseases of the tissues surrounding the tooth, gums, tooth roots and bone and the treatment methods that can be applied to them. The primary aim of periodontology is to prevent gum disease with correct and timely intervention.

Causes of gum disease

  • Plaque accumulating in the mouth begins to turn into dental calculus within 2 weeks and causes problems in the gums.
  • Since harmful bacteria are more common in smokers than non-smokers, gum disease is more common.
  • Due to the change in hormones in adolescence, some microorganisms increase in the mouth and gum diseases may occur due to the amount of plaque, gum bleeding is frequently seen.
  • Gum disease during pregnancy also affects the health of the baby. Premature birth increases the risk of miscarriage and underweight baby.
  • The decrease in hormones in menopause can cause complaints of burning in the mouth, dry mouth, and gingival recession.
